MAN AND MARRIAGE

“He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so – Matthew 19:8.”

Marriage is endorsed by God when speaking in the book of Jeremiah – “

Turn, O backsliding children, saith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion – Jer. 3:14.”

Jesus Christ spoke more about marriage that some of the subjects we now focus upon nowadays. Marriage was among the top three messages of Christ Jesus – The Kingdom of God, Money and Marriage. In fact, when Christ was speaking about the Kingdom of God, He used the concept of marriage often. This should tell us that there is an important message God encodes into marriage.

Let’s start with Genesis. Having created all things with the stamp of “very good – Gen. 1:31,” God had to say this about man –

“And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him – Gen. 2:18.”
This means, God’s intention for man from the beginning is of goodness. Listen, God did not say “man is not good” in the beginning. He said “it is not good for man” to be alone. The problem was not man as it were, it is the “being alone.” So, God planned marriage to be a channel of help to show man his limitedness.

More so, before the mandate of marriage came, the two basic duties of man which were worship and work had been settled. So, in short, before any man must think or plan towards marriage, let the aspect of worship and work be fully settled in his life. Again, man didn’t know what was good for himself like God did in the beginning. It was God who knew that the man needed helpmeet. Nowadays, people just launch into marriage out of their own volition. Don’t make that mistake, I beseech you. Let God lead and guide. He is still very much interested in it.

Furthermore, as the Lord Jesus was teaching, there was this clause which He used – “…in the beginning it was not so.” What was He talking about? Definitely, it was marriage. But what aspect of marriage? First, He had to refer to God’s original plan for man about divorce. God did not intend divorce for marriage. It is the leaving before cleaving and there was no time frame after that–

“Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh – Gen. 2:24.”
So, marriage, as far as God is concerned, is said to be till death. The second point is that, marriage is between man and woman. It is heterogenous (opposite sex) and not homogenous (same sex). Third, it is monogamy (a man and his wife) –
“…a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife… - Gen. 2:24.”

Above all, the message of marriage as taught by our Lord Jesus Christ is to show us the love of God and His kingdom. One of the reasons the Lord Jesus Christ spoke more about this subject is that it seems to be one of the basic units upon which other systems are built. Failure in this aspect can cut across other branches. This day, we are to know the mind of God for us. Let us consider the mind of God for His people from the beginning.

Is there any concern about marriage in your life, family or community? Let us approach God with the “in the beginning it was not so” mind and spirit and we should always no that the thought God has for us is of peace and not evil. God is still leading people in marriage. But as for the wicked, this is what their lot shall be –

“And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her – Ecc. 7:26.”

Breathe, Holy Spirit breathe upon this message much more than the writer’s ability and capability.
