OIL OF GLADNESS
“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound – Isaiah 61:1” Oil in the scripture symbolises anointing or it is used for such purpose “to anoint”, so is the Holy Spirit. For it is written, “ How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him – Acts. 10:38 .” Therefore, we are to consider the Oil here as metaphor for the Holy Spirit. Hence, the Spirit of Gladness. From the text above, we see what the Spirit of gladness does. Among many functions, we have, preaching of good tidings, binding up broken-heart, proclamation of liberty and opening of prison.
