GOD'S DWELLING PLACE

“For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones – Isaiah 57:15.”

Many believe that God dwells in heaven. Well, that is not the whole truth. It is true that God’s throne is in heaven. But you see, throne is just part of a house or dwelling place. The book of Isaiah says –

“Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool: where is the house that ye build unto me? and where is the place of my rest? – Is. 66:1.”
So, in this case, heaven is His throne and if we take heaven for throne, throne is not a place to dwell as such. It is a sitting place. So, we can liken heaven to God’s seat.

Jesus Christ gave us an account into the Father’s house which many believed to mean heaven. Jesus didn’t state it categorically to mean heaven though. In the gospel according to John, Jesus said –

“In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also – Jn. 14:2-3.”
So, in a sense this prepared place is mean to be heaven. However, in most of His parables, Jesus spoke about the Kingdom of God or Kingdom of Heaven as the case may be. These are just to denote where God lives or dwells.

In the Old Testament, during the Levitical era, there was a tabernacle segmented into different parts having the outer court, inner court and the holiest of all. While it is believed that the God is in His holy temple, the holiest of all happened to be where He abode.

During the era of the kings, temples, houses and buildings were erected to His honour for worship. David planned and purposed to build Him a temple but it was Solomon that was approved to build it –

“But Solomon built him an house – Acts. 7:47.”
When Solomon prayed, there was signs and occurrence just as it happened in the days of Moses to show that God’s glory was in the house.

By the time we journeyed into the New Testament right into the period when Jesus was bodily present, the dwelling place of God was supposed to be the Synagogues – a place of worship or worship centres. Then after the Pentecost, the Lord God made it clear to us that He intended to live and dwell not in temples made with hands and bricks but in a city whose Maker and Builder is God. Having known all this about heaven and the dwelling place of God, it is necessary to consider further knowledge about the dwelling place of God.

Come, let us trust the Holy Spirit to show us the dwelling place of God. for some, when they hear about heaven, what comes to their mind is “It is too far or high.” And others it is unreachable and unthinkable. Nevertheless, there is a sure place where God delights to dwell. It is true that He dwells in a high and lofty place because He is high and lofty also. Oh, how sweet and unbelievable to know and conceive that not just in heaven or synagogues, God dwells in earthen vessels to. That is His real dwelling place. God dwells in a humble Spirit.

Are you humble? If you are not, don’t be deceived, God is not dwelling in you. You are not His dwelling place. One way to show sign of humility and to have humble spirit is by coming to Jesus Christ to believe Him and obey Him because He is meek and lowly. God also dwells in a contrite heart. This is the dwelling place of God. if you have none of this, you are not His dwelling place. The mind and will of God for us is to be His dwelling place –

“Wherefore when he cometh into the world, he saith, Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, but a body hast thou prepared me – Heb. 10:5.”
