SERVE GOD

“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon – Matthew 6:24.”

Oh my people, hearken and give ears to this. O ye men, which is easier, to serve one or two people. Every wise man knows that it is better, convenient and acceptable to serve one person at a time than serving two people. The Spirit cries unto all whose heart is willing to be applied unto wisdom to serve the living God for this is good and acceptable.

Service entails giving or using one’s time, strength and substance (material physical and spiritual) to another person [but in this case God] to show commitment, honour and the degree of love toward Him. There are various ways service can be expressed, demonstrated and given.

God created man to serve Him. In a sense and to a very large extent, service is a form of worship. We can determine the service of any by the way and manner he worships another. Now, we are admonished on whom we must serve. Our time, energy and substances are to be given unto God in service.

Men and women who served God in the scriptures are exemplified unto to so that we can learn and know the way we ought to behave ourselves wisely.

Surprisingly, there is another being who also wanted man’s service to himself. He uses different means, wiles, devices and enticing methods to lure him into joining his league. This person in question is the devil. He desires to be served. As a matter of truth, Jesus Christ gave us insight into this when He said –

“For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth – Lk. 22:27.”

Read the text above again. One way to identify the activity of devil in any place and region is when anyone demands to be worshipped to served other than God. If we must be sincere with ourselves, the service of billions of people in this world is unto the devil and not God. Jesus Christ called him the prince of this world. A prince is said to be a kind of king without a kingdom. However, the devil is amassing great number of multitudes unto himself so that they can serve him.

These services come in various forms – in money, pride, position, possessions and other things of the world which people are craving to have. This is the reason he is called the god of this world because he is the god which many people worship knowingly or unknowingly.

Now, our Lord Jesus Christ is calling our attention to this truth that only God deserves to be served. Serving many gods is foolishness. For which is better to follow one master to the end or run after many masters? Oh it is the way of the world we live in to be jack-of-all-trades.

Listen, no man can serve two masters. We are not wiser than Jesus Christ who told us this thousand of years ago and His words are still valid and potent till now. There will always come a time in the life of a man to choose only one God. Joshua called the people of Israel –

“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD – Josh. 24:15.”
Elijah called the people about four hundred years later –
“…if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him… - 1Kgs. 18:21.”

Serve God, His rewards are more than your services. But if you serve Satan, his service is hard and his wages such as a man cannot live on.
