SOLDIER OF CHRIST
“Thou therefore endure hardness, as a good soldier of Jesus Christ – 2Timothy 2:3.”
Soldier is a person enrolled in the army for security of
lives and properties of his people and nation. According to Joab, a soldier is
a person of courage fighting to protect their people and place (nation) from
the control and invasion of the enemies. Scripturally, there are people who are
chosen from among the people to represent the whole assembly. These men are to
guard and watch over the cities and the people for safety. True, if God does not
keep a city, the watchmen wake in vain. Nevertheless, the Lord has stationed
some people to be watchmen.
As we have soldiers in the physical, so we have them in the
kingdom of God. Well, the soldiers in various armies of the nations of the
world have weapons and of necessity and importance must have undergone training
and orientation for a particular period of time before they can be proved to
launch forth into battles. They have their weapons (physical), they keep fit,
rationing their food, sleep, time, and other things just to make sure that at
any time the sound of the trumpet is heard, they are ready to go to war.
This is also applicable to the soldiers of Christ. Without
doubt and controversy, it is clear that the weapons of the soldiers of Christ
are not carnal. But that does not mean they do not have any weapon at all. As
soldiers of Christ, we are to endure hardness. This is one of the requirements
in our training. It is a perquisite to be numbered, named and counted among the
armies of the Lord of hosts.
The Davids must endure loneliness whether in the cave of
Adullam or the Keilah. They must endure hunger as it was in the time of Nabal
and Abigail or the period of rejection by their own countrymen. The Abrahams
must learn parting away with their choicest possessions such as Lots, Ishmael,
lands and even the Isaacs. The Moses must go through the path of the wilderness
to serve for forty years before encountering the Lord. If he had not gone
through the way of leading the sheep enduring the frost in the winter and the
heat of the sun during the day, he wouldn’t have been fit to lead God’s people.
As soldiers of Christ, He gave us the definition of this person. So, according to Christ Jesus, a soldier is a person –
“…Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me – Mk. 8:34.”As soldiers of Christ, we are likened to disciples too. As disciple, what are those things that are expected of us? First, Christ Jesus said we must deny ourselves.
This is played out beautifully when you see soldiers committed to fighting for the cause of their nations and people. They do not count their lives dear to them. A fearful soldier is not fit to be among the army of the Lord. God has a way of separating such soldiers (who are not soldiers at all) from His people. See what a separation He used to sever the Gideon’s army. Are you Christ’s soldier? Are you still counting your life dear to you? If yes, you aren’t a soldier yet. For those in the book of Revelation had this testimony that –
“…and they loved not their lives unto the death – Rev. 12:11.”
The next thing the Lord Jesus mentioned is carrying the
cross. This is where the endurance comes in. We need to learn from the Lord
Jesus Christ in carrying His cross. His prayer at Gethsemane, the stripes and
scourging at Gabatha and the jeering, mockery and scorning at Golgotha.
Dare to be a soldier of Christ? I beg of you brother, there is much at stake. As a soldier, you had better advised to stay at your duty post –
“Blessed is the man that heareth me, watching daily at my gates, waiting at the posts of my doors – Pro. 8:34.”There are times pressure may come to leave your post – endure, brother. Endure!
ENDURANCE GREETINGS
