WOES TO THE DRUNK
“And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit – Ephesians 5:18.”
Drunkenness is something
that the bible talks about. The scripture is not silent about this subject. The
major form of drunkenness recorded in the Bible is with wine. Noah was full of
it and he cursed his grandchild. Lot was made drunk by his two daughters. He lost
control over his will and mind and he slept and impregnated them giving birth
to children who became thorns in the flesh of the nation Israel.
Nabal lost his right sense of judgement because of this when David sent unto his men unto him for assistance. In his drunkenness he despised whom he shouldn’t and disdained those he should have been benefactor to. King Ahasuerus was also one by this example because he made a law while drunk. It was a right saying from the mother of king Lemuel that –
“…it is not for kings to drink wine; nor for princes strong drink: Lest they drink, and forget the law, and pervert the judgment of any of the afflicted. Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts – Pro. 31:4-6.”
King Herod, the one who married Herodias, must have been drunk when he promised to kind half of his kingdom to a damsel because she danced –
“And when a convenient day was come, that Herod on his birthday made a supper to his lords, high captains, and chief estates of Galilee – Mk. 6:21.”This is an assertion which I suppose to be true because it was at meal time where there would have been food to eat and wine to drink.
In the sixteenth and seventeenth
centuries, the Lord sent revival to the people of that dispensation. It was
time when almost every house was alcohol shop. Wine and strong drinks were commonly
brewed on the streets and in the communities. Artisans, partisans, soldiers, factory
workers, cola miners and almost all spheres of life including the sacred and
holy places, the plague of alcoholism and drunkenness was sweeping although. Even
when it concerned the holy place, where communion is to be served, many
preachers and church-goers encouraged drunkenness. This persisted until the
Lord sent men after His own heart to bring righteousness to the land.
The effect of the revival
was evident. Drunken and useless fathers became useful and responsible. Promiscuous
mothers buried in whoredom repented and turned unto the Lord. Disobedient children
began to seek the Lord God early. People who were making their profit from the
business of wine and alcohol had to close their shops because the power of the
Holy Ghost was at work in the life of the people.
Now, centuries of years
after, we see shops opening again. Where has the revival gone? That is the question
upon the lips of every child of God. Youths are fully engaged with all forms of
drugs and acts of drunkenness. Yea, truth faileth and he that departeth from
evil maketh himself a prey. They Lord saw this and was displeased that there
was no judgement.
The writer of Proverbs said –
“Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh: For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags – Pro. 23:20-21.”Poverty is not automatic. It can be traced. And in most cases, it is traceable to drunkenness. Listen to this again –
“Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes? They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine – Pro. 23:29-30.”
There is a real and
better wine God has given to us – The Holy Ghost. We are to be drunk with the
Holy Ghost. He is the Spirit of the Most High. What a comparison. By the way,
alcohol is also known as spirit. and many people believed it makes them go “high.”
The Holy Spirit is more. He will make you to be filled with the Most High. This
is the only way to escape the woes of drunkenness. Believe in the Lord Jesus
Christ and be saved.
SPIRIT-FILLED GREETINGS
