WORTHINESS OF THE LAMB

“Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing – Revelation 5:12.”

To be worthy is to deserve something. When the word deserve is used, it means sacrifice, service or act of benevolence has been rendered to which another act of appreciation or judgment assumed to be of equivalent to what was done is to be given. For instance, if a thief is caught and was punished, people would say “that served him right” or “he deserved what was done to him.” On the other hand, when a man did exceptional well at his place of work and he is promoted, it is saved to be he deserved it. So, to deserve or to be worthy of something is to have a recompense of reward or judgement for the act of service or deed done.

In direct application to our text, we see here that the Lamb of God, that is, the Lord Jesus Christ is said to be worthy of seven glorious and powerful virtues here, namely; power, riches, wisdom, strength, honour, glory and blessing. These sevenfold virtues are not just given as gifts. They are given as a result of compensating work done. The worthiness is double fold.

First, they are His from the foundation of the world by the virtue of His nature and person ere the world began. Second, He worked to earn them. It is of this second order we shall dwell upon today. Worthiness is not cheap. Talk is cheap, they say. As for worthiness, it was never and it would never be cheap. Search through the scripture, everywhere and place the word worthy is used, you will discover that there was work done, act of sacrifice to be noted and notable service rendered. Let us consider some passages:

“Nor scrip for your journey, neither two coats, neither shoes, nor yet staves: for the workman is worthy of his meat – Matthew 10:10.”

“Let the elders that rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine – 1Thessalonians 5:17.”

In the case of Mordecai, it was said that – “Haman came in. And the king said unto him, What shall be done unto the man whom the king delighteth to honour? Now Haman thought in his heart, To whom would the king delight to do honour more than to myself? – Esther 6:6” This was after the man saved the life of the king from his two chamberlains who conspired to kill him.

In greater measure and degree is this to be said of our Lord Jesus as touching His worthiness. He came from above putting on the nature of flesh to redeem and deliver us from sin, death and the devil. He had to render a sacrifice and service none ever rendered from antiquity to eternity. He laid down His life for the salvation of men. He died to give us life. He suffered for us to be healed so that by His striped we were healed. For this reason, God gave Him a name above all names.

See these great and marvellous works which our Lord had done for us. Everyone that believes in Him becomes a partaker of this worthiness. If ye believe, you become a partaker of His kingdom, glory, honour, blessing, power, thanksgiving and most importantly His divine nature. If you believe, you are worthy also.
