JESUS TEACHES

“Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls – Matthew 11:29.”

Jesus Christ is a Teacher. Not just a teacher but The Teacher. At least by known it is known to us in scripture that people came to Him to hear Him speak. Prominent about those who came to Him was a master in Israel called Nicodemus. Reading through that portion in the scripture, that John chapter three where Jesus Christ referred to Nicodemus as a master in Israel, it struck me to look closely as though Jesus meant to say, “the man had master in science in things pertaining to Israel worship, laws, geography and the likes…”.

Yet it was this man who said of Jesus Christ that –

“…Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him – Jn. 3:2.”
From here, we can infer to say Christ Jesus was Master of masters and Teacher of teachers. As a matter of truth, He is fairer than the children of men because grace is poured into His lips therefore God has loved Him forever.

Now, what should be our response and disposition to This Teacher of teachers. Without further ado, we are to learn of and from Him. Anywhere or everywhere learning in any form is known, seen, observed or carried out, there must we find the teacher also. There are many teachers found in the scriptures one of which is nature –

“Doth not even nature itself teach you… - 1Cor. 11:14.”
Indirectly too, animals were also noted as teachers one of which is ants – “
Go to the ant, thou sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise – Pro. 6:6.”
In another instance, experience could also be numbered among teachers. This was the case with Laban; experience was his teacher –
“…for I have learned by experience that the LORD hath blessed me for thy sake – Gen. 30:27.”

Several times in the scriptures, we have been able to discover that it was as if teaching was the major mode or means by which Jesus operated the most. In the mountains, you should find Him preaching and teaching. In the synagogues. He would first ask questions, then He would teach after which healing would be the next on the list. Where else did Jesus not teach? In the boat, by the sea shore, in houses, along the way, in the feast, while on the sea, He kept teaching. In some cases, on the streets, He was found teaching and preaching also.

From these premises, it behooves us to think that Christ is ready to teach wherever men are found. Not just in the church or synagogue alone even in houses, on the streets, in workplaces, Jesus is ready and available to teach. This is the reason for the call above – “Come unto Me…” When Christ Jesus calls, what does He expect from us? Many of us believe that He is calling to take our yokes and give us rest. Yes, that true but that is not the primary reason for His calling. Others are of the opinion that He called to save us from sin and the wrath to come. True, that is part of His purpose and reason. But even this is not case here. As a teacher, His first aim and desire is for His students or disciples to stay or be with Him. This is the first –

“And He ordained twelve, that they should be with Him… – Mk. 3:14.”
The second and the major reason the teacher would call upon students to come is to learn –
“…and learn of Me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.”

Jesus Christ is The Teacher of teachers. Jesus teaches, but how are we faring in learning. The apostle said –

“But ye have not so learned Christ – Eph. 4:20.”
How well have we learnt? Like Philip, would Jesus still ask us –
“…Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known Me, Philip?” - Jn. 14:9.
Let not our case be like those about whom it is written that –
“Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth – 2Tim. 3:7.”
