TO SERVE

“Issachar is a strong ass couching down between two burdens – Genesis 49:14.”

Service today is seen as a heinous word. Most people often tag service with the word “suffering.” The real meaning of service is to serve and to serve is either to do what people can or cannot do for themselves. To serve can also be said to work for someone in exchange for something valuable and precious which will worth the wait, the time, the resources and energy used. To serve can also be said to be in a position of assisting someone who appears to be a superior or master with the intention of gaining knowledge and becoming like that master someday –

It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord… – Matt. 10:25.”

Using the word of our Master, Lord Jesus Christ, to serve means to minister. One word commonly used for those that serve is servant. And each time we hear the word servant, we feel like that purpose is an inferior person. Again, when the word servant is mentioned, people often those men or women in that position to be suffering people, people without significance, people without wisdom or knowledge, uneducated and without focus or future. That is not true. Do you know another name for servant is minister? We are in a dispensation where the name of words and its application have really changed the meaning. Jesus said –

“And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all – Mk. 10:44.”
Again, in another place, He said –
“Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you – Jn. 13:13-15.”

Whether you use the word servant, serve, service or suffering, the point that we must establish in all is that to serve is not evil. To serve is not s curse. We all are born to serve. The place of service cannot be erased or overlooked. Christ Jesus came into this world to serve. To an extent, even when we know He is Lord of all, yet it was like Him to humble Himself and took upon Him the form of a servant –

But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men – Php. 2:7.”
He came to serve.

When Jacob was to depart from the world, he called his children and started to bless them. Yes, he blessed them. The reason it happened or appeared to us as though some of the were cursed was because of their actions and attitude toward approaching things. The main intention and the purpose of God for Israel was to bless his children among whom was Issachar. Reading through the text, we see that this man Issachar didn’t have much written about him other than in this case and few other occasions when genealogy and numbering of the people were involved. Perhaps, this is one of the reasons people don’t like the word servant – servants are not always at the forefront of fame, glamour and honour as such. They aren’t the talk of the town. And you see, to serve is a blessing.

The next time the children of Issachar were mentioned, there were discovered among them some men who could discern when Israel ought to go to battle. They were called men of understanding. Not all servants will rise to become prominent or like their master. Not all servants will end up becoming successful and wise. However, even a master is a servant to another in one way or the other.

Now, as we conclude, it is necessary to tell us whom to serve. Ye cannot serve God and Mammon. Listen carefully, Christ Jesus came in a form of a servant, we must not show ourselves to be more than this form – servants. Serve the Lord Jesus Christ –

Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ – Col. 3:14.”
If we must reign with the Lord, we must serve Him in Spirit and in truth and this service can come or gain expression by serving men (one another). Serve!
