MAN'S HELPLESSNESS

 

“And he said, If the LORD do not help thee, whence shall I help thee? out of the barnfloor, or out of the winepress? – 2Kings 6:27.”

 

There are many instances and references in the scripture that are drawing our attention to know the frailty and weakness in man. The text above seems to be one of them. Men, on the surface level, love to show off as the “all-sufficient.” In his form, man would always like to be like the Laodicean Church who said –

“…I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing… - Rev. 3:17.”
You must have been hearing slogans and statements like “Do It Yourself,” “Empower yourself,” “Self Sufficiency,” “Financial Independent,” “Financial Freedom” and so on. Haven’t you? Most of these agendas are targeted towards enthroning one candidate in man called “self.” The medium through which this candidate gains expression or expresses itself is called flesh. Man, O man.

 

Come, people chosen from the foundation of the world to hear the word of truth. Let us approach the Lord today, to hear, learn and understand His wisdom as touching man. It is our duty for us to go to the Father to see the weaknesses, infirmities and helplessness in man.

 

Let’s us begin with politics. Nations of the world are making policies which they think are good and should promote the welfare of the people. But what do we have? These policies, in a major way, haven’t been a able to make things better. The heavens and heavens are the Lord’s but the earth has He given to the children of men. But when you look the earth given unto man, there are unjust practices, wickedness and atrocities which have turned the world upside down.

 

The next is government. The foolishness of man is still showing still. A candidate comes now and flaunt himself or herself as the “saviour.” They parade themselves as “messiahs.” Yest men would not learn. They would go about campaigning and proclaiming they have seen the saviour. What you see on the placards are enough to tell you about the helplessness of man – “end to injustice,” “no more brutality,” “no to rape and sexual molestation”. In some cases, you would even see agendas such as good roads, electricity, high employment rate, good production, fair taxes and tariffs etc. Let me ask you, have you seen those promises fulfilled? When would the nations of the world learn righteousness that in this case man is helpless but God is able to do all things.

 

In medicine, you will also discover the helplessness of man. Despite unwavering good strides and innovative development in this field, there are things that are not in order still. Every day researches are taking place to solve one problem or the other. Advancements in this field is encouraging but you see, it has not stopped death from killing men. It has not in any way reduced the rate and spread of diseases, sicknesses and plagues. They haven’t been able to stop men from sinning. And most diseases of the world are traceable to sin. Who ten can help us and deliver us from sin? The Lord Jesus Christ.

 

To mention but a few. Now, let us consider the statement of the king. When would the nations of the world and all men everywhere come to admit the truth in the statement of this king? Listen, kings are helpless too. Aren’t they man? After all, they are men too. When would men everywhere and in the world all over come to accept the trueness in the word of the Psalmist that –

“Give us help from trouble: for vain is the help of man – Ps. 60:11.”

 

Finally, this is the counsel of the Lord to us. Men are limited. All men are but God is not limited. Men in one way or the other are helpless but God is not. There are situations that would happen that even those you call “helper” will be helpless. This is what you must know, in any area at all you know you are helpless, come to Jesus Christ today and He will help you. In need of help? Come to the Saviour now!
