A PREPARED TABLE - I
“Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over – Psalms 23:5.”
Table
in must cases signifies an object or place where meal is set. So ideally, we
can say it is where members of family gather to eat. Scripturally, almost every
passage where table is mentioned is attached to food. Where it is divinely
used, then sacrifice is substituted for food. When there is a table made by men
for God, such table is said to accept or accommodate sacrifice. In this case,
we can therefore infer that table can be prepared by man for man or God and God
can also make table for man. The table man makes for God is used for sacrifice
while the one prepared by God for man is said to be full of all blessings
according to the need of the moment. It is the table prepared by God for man we
shall speak of today.
In the
text above, we shall consider three points. First the beneficiary of the
prepared table. The state and position of the table and the third, the need for
the preparation.
Friends,
God still prepares table for His people. The father is saddled with the
responsibilities of the family. The case is true of our Heavenly Father also.
Amongst the responsibilities of our Heavenly Father, three are most needed by His
people – food, forgiveness and freedom. A father that provides food for the
family, forgives or pardons the infirmities of members as necessary and serves
as wall of defence (protection), that is, freedom from ill or harm for the
members of the family, such a man is fulfilling is ministry. God is The
Provider.
Now,
who are the beneficiaries of this. True, all men have needs and God meets these
needs. God provides for all men. However, there are some peculiarities and
particularities to be considered for this kind of prepared table. It is meant
for God’s children. The children must first be fed with bread not the
strangers. In the first verse of the text, it reads, the Lord is my Shepherd, I
shall not want. Shall no want, lack or need what? These are itemized in the
verse and also in the gospel according to John chapter ten where the Lord
mentioned the functions and responsibilities of the Shepherd to the sheep.
These are the lots of God’s people. Few of the blessings are protection,
provision, satisfaction, healing etc.
The
state of the table is prepared in such a way that it is before the enemies.
This is to tell us that the table is not meant for all men especially people
who do not believe in Christ Jesus. Beloved and friends, if you are not on the
Lord’s side, you are His enemies and the table of blessings in health,
protection, provision, satisfaction is not meant for you. This is why it would
be said of those liken to young lions that they shall lack and suffer hunger
because they do not reconcile to God.
The
third point to consider is the need for the preparation. God prepares this
table for His children because He knows their low estate, their weakness, their
needs, their frame and to what extent they atre meant to endure before reaching
breaking point. For this cause, God supplies the needs of His people according
to His riches by Christ Jesus. Just know this that God is aware about your
needy state. What you are expected to do is make sure you are not part of His
enemies. Come to Jesus now and today to be part of this Great Family of God.
Once this is done, be sure He will prepare a table before you. This table is
full of all manner of assorted provisions to meet and satisfy the hungry and
thirsty souls much more than sheet that Peter saw in his trance. Come to the
table prepared. Come without money. Come repenting!
