WALKING BY LIGHT

“When His candle shined upon my head, and when by His light I walked through darkness – Job 29:3.”

Everybody testifies to the fact that light plays an important role in life. What can man do without light? What can animal do without light? Even plants derive their essential nutrients from one source of light or the other. So, it is true in every instance that light is indispensable. All those who think they can do without light are just deceiving themselves. And by the way, even the rulers of darkness need light at least to have work (something to fight against even when they know they cannot prosper or overcome). That’s just aside though. But think of it and may the Lord give you understanding that light is important.

To start with, Jesus Christ told us in His word that –

“…Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world – Jn. 11:9.”
This is the major aspect of our teaching on light today. We shall be considering the importance of light in helping our walk and also playing an important role in direction.

The “perfect” man, Job spoke about a time in his life when the candle of the Lord shone upon his head and by the light of God, he was able to walk through darkness. This is where we need to pay attention and make sure nothing shifts our gaze from the ultimate lesson God would like to communicate to us this day.

We know that The Word of God is life and this Life is the light of men. So, the light in and with which we are expected to walk through darkness is such that darkness cannot comprehend it. This is written for us that

“…and the light shineth in darkness and the darkness comprehended it not.”
This is the light to walk with. The word of God must be to us the lamp with which we journey through this wilderness of Kedar called earth. Let the light of the word of God guide you in that decision you are about to make. Yes, you. I am talking to you.

This is a world of darkness; a world in darkness; surrounded by the same. I hope you do not need anyone to tell you that darkness covers the world and gross darkness the people? I do really pray you do not need anyone to make you think otherwise. Knowing this to be the present state of the world, which is the truth, with what are we to walk through this earth as pilgrims to the City of God? It is not a small task that Christ charged us that we are the light of the world. He wanted us to know that the world is in dire need of light.

Jesus gave an explicit warning that in this wise –

“But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him – Jn. 11:10.”
No wonder we see people falling daily both the high and the mighty, the rich and the poor. If you intend to walk by the light of the economy in your nation, one thing is certain, you will surely fall. It is not stable. It can not be trusted. Those who trusted their financial status have come to acknowledge that –
“…for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven – Pro. 23:5.”
Therefore, take counsel,
“…if riches increase, set not your heart upon them – Ps. 62:10.”
Mind you, the light of your friends is not the right kind of light to walk by. Friends disserted Jesus. It is true that proverbs says "Friend loveth at all times", but what is worse that the kisses of betrayal from a friend. Better to hug a bear than to trust in man.

There are all kinds of light. This is the reason John affirmed

“…That was the true Light… - Jn. 1:9.”
If one should walk by or with other lights apart from the True Light, Christ Jesus, the Word of God, one is bound to fail, faint and fall. There is ONLY ONE LIGHT capable of leading one through and to overcome the darkness – THE WORD OF GOD.

Hearken to this and learn wisdom. O ye people, give ear and know the mind of God concerning you this season. To reject the word of God for you in this time and age is to sign a treaty with failure and fall – falling into sin, hell and damnation. How long will you keep falling O man? Don’t you know that surely the Lord has set the wicked in a slippery place, so that they are cast down into destruction. Why? It is written thus:

“He that is ready to slip with his feet is as a lamp despised in the thought of him that is at ease – Job 12:5.”
To despise, neglect, disdain or reject the word of God is to reject the light. To reject the light means stumbling is nigh and ultimately inevitable. I am afraid that many who stumbled did not recover – they slipped away into damnation. Receive wisdom today, let the light of God guide you by this order your steps lest thou fall into condemnation. JESUS IS THE LIGHT.
